Gas Line Safety: Warning Signs Every Homeowner Should Know
Natural gas is safe when the system is sound and dangerous when it is not. Knowing the warning signs — and who to call first — matters more than any repair advice.
Signs of a possible leak
Treat any of these as urgent.
- A rotten-egg or sulfur odor
- Hissing or whistling near piping or an appliance
- Dead or discolored vegetation along a buried line
- Soot or yellow burner flames instead of blue
- Repeated pilot outages
- Unexplained headaches, dizziness, or nausea indoors
What to do immediately
Leave the building. Do not switch lights, use phones, or start a vehicle inside. From a safe distance, contact Piedmont Natural Gas, and call 911 if there is any immediate danger. Environmental Trades does not provide emergency gas response — we perform the permitted repair once the area is safe.
Prevention through inspection
A scheduled inspection and pressure test verifies pipe condition, sizing against connected load, appliance connectors, and CSST bonding — the items that quietly become problems years after installation.
